The 2018 Hawai'i National Great Teachers Seminar has been relocated to the campus of the University of Hawaii in Hilo, Hawaii. There are no classes during our seminar week so we will have the dorm and conference room to ourselves.
We always knew that our 30th Annual Hawai`i National Great Teachers would be a special event – and it will be!! As you have heard, Pele, the Fire Goddess, has created spectacular volcanic fireworks which have closed the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. The Kilauea Military Camp, our original seminar venue, is located in that park.
The city of Hilo is safely outside of the Kilauea Volcano East Rift Zone. The University of Hawaii at Hilo website (https://hilo.hawaii.edu/puna-lava-flow/) posted the following answers to questions they received:
Could the lava reach the UH Hilo or the Hawaiʻi Community College campus?
There is no chance that lava flows related to this eruption will reach the Hilo campuses.
Does the eruption pose any health hazards for students and employees while on the UH Hilo or Hawaii Community College campus?
There is no increased health hazard on the Hilo campuses due to the eruption. However, due to increased gas emissions, there is a possibility for sporadically heavier vog [volcanic smog] concentrations at times in the future.
The air quality in Hilo has been consistently rated “Good.” (https://www.airnow.gov/index.cfm?action=airnow.local_city&mapcenter=0&cityid=44)
Participants should fly into the HILO AIRPORT. There are numerous daily flights from Honolulu International Airport to the Hilo Airport. Scheduled bus transportation to University of Hawaii at Hilo is included in the registration fee.
KMC is a two and a half hour drive from the Kona Airport and there is no scheduled transportation from Kona to KMC. We do not recommend flying into Kona Airport.
Participants are assigned to cozy dorm rooms. A variety of recreational possibilities are available on site--swimming pool, gym, tennis courts, and hiking paths.
